How to still hold on

acfbdb31f6540cf18d73e567bbe1ba25It has ever been my way

to wonder

where two lovers part

one walking slow in thought

unrolling absence and rope-burned tug

how to transform

from one coronation cup held aloft

in morning air

a magic carpet of crisp hopefulness

to shrugged farewell

asking

what of me do you take

with you?

back we go

packing our footsteps

the rifle of life cocked

ticking down the seconds

pressed in dormant gunpowder

could be we swim on golden pond

just as dawn makes autumn a yellow girl

emerging from water and light

spilling from her need

imagine that

our shared thoughts holding each other

no distance separating unified hearts

of those who know when separate

how

to still hold on

  1. Beautiful and haunting–just like the absence of a lover or, better yet, a soulmate

  2. I agree. I find it sad that distance causes this in a way as it’s a bit fake but it’s also human nature to think about what we do not have and sometimes take for granted what we have. You are so right. I aim hard to avoid taking things for granted. I still do but I try not to.

  3. “the rifle of life cocked
    ticking down the seconds
    pressed in dormant gunpowder
could be we swim on golden pond”
makes me think of final partings more than mere distance… aging, the imminence of death. Haunting and lovely.
